Dear International Student , I am very glad that you have decided to study at the Jagiellonian University, the oldest university in Poland. It was established in 1364 and draws constantly on its rich tradition. In the Middle Ages, the University hosted many students from Europe, mostly Central and Eastern, as well as from the whole of Poland. Among them Nicolaus Copernicus was, of course, the student we have the best reason to be proud of. Presently, at the time of great technological progress leading to the strong need for international co-operation, we would like to revive the international tradition of our University. During your studies at the Jagiellonian University, we would like to share with you the knowledge of our scholars and to show you our culture, traditions and way of life. We would also like to get to know you and your country better. Our syllabi in English offered to international students are interdisciplinary, therefore we hope you will find subjects of interest among the humanities or natural science courses. They will also be attended by Polish students. This will give you the possibility to get to know your Polish colleagues and to exchange with them your views and experience. I hope you will also find the time to explore the cultural treasures of our University, city and region. The University Museum, located in the oldest University building, exhibits the scientific equipment of bygone centuries, widely recognized as an exquisite collection of science history. The University Library, one of the oldest and best equipped in Poland, holds many valuable testimonials of ancient times in its medieval manuscripts and rare prints. Krakow, ancient Polish capital, offers a beautiful medieval architectural setting for your student life. The world-renowned Salt Mine in Wieliczka, absolutely unique, is not far from the city, either. It is my belief and hope that your stay at the Jagiellonian University will bring you a sound knowledge of the modern sciences and humanities, familiarize you with the culture of our country and be a pleasant personal experience, you will remember with satisfaction and pleasure. I wish you success in your studies and student life, With warm regards, Prof. Maria Szewczyk Ph.D. Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs |
