PROGRAMMES IN POLISH - application and admission

Several types of programmes in Polish are available to international students:
Programmes leading to a Bachelor degree (3 years - full-time, extramural or evening)
Programmes leading to a Master degree (5 years - full-time, extramural or evening)
Programmes leading to a Master degree for holders of a Bachelor degree (2-3 years - full-time or individual)
Doctoral studies (4 years - full-time or individual)
Postgraduate non-degree studies

All of these programmes or studies are taught in Polish. In the case of doctoral studies,foreigners having little or no command of Polish may enroll for individual programmes.

According to the "Higher Education Act" Article 43 of July 27, 2005 persons permitted to apply for admission and continuation of studies and allowed to participate in academic research and courses on equal terms with polish citizens are: 1. foreigners granted a settlement permit 2. foreigners with a refugee status granted in Poland 3. foreigners offered temporary protection in the territory of the Polish Republic 4. immigrant employees with a citizenship in one of the EU or EFTA countries (signatories of the European Economic Area Agreement), provided they are or have been employed in Poland, and their families residing in Poland. 5. citizens of EU or EFTA countries (signatories of the European Economic Area Agreement) and their families provided that they have financial resources necessary to cover cost of studying; such persons are not entitled to receive bursaries. Foreigners - citizens of EU and EFTA member states - signatories of the European Economic Area Agreement are allowed to study and participating in academic research: 1. as polish scholarship holders, 2. as a fee-paying students 3. free from charges and scholarships 4. as the free-from-fee holders of scholarship from their country of origin 5. as the holders of scholarship from an educational institution Citizens of EU and EFTA countries - signatories of the European Economic Area Agreement - (that is the Republic of Iceland, Principality of Liechtenstein and the Kingdom of Norway) are admitted according to the same rules and regulations that hold for the polish citizens. Therefore should the admission be based on an entry examination a foreigner named in the Higher Education Act (Article 43) is required to participate in the admission procedure as organized by a given higher education institution. The only persons exempt from this rule are the foreigners selected in the previous year by the Ministry of National Education and Sport admission boards and through the Bureau for Academic Recognition and International Exchange. The foreigners specified in the Higher Education Act who participate in the paid forms of education organized by the higher education institutions (such as evening, extramural or postgraduate studies and classes taught in foreign languages) pay fees according to the same regulations and of the same amount as the citizens of Poland. These foreigners have a right to apply for scholarships and for scientific achievement grants from the ministry responsible for higher education issues according to the rules analogous to those applying to polish students. The scholarships are paid out as to the polish citizens from the budget resources granted to the higher education institutions as a means of material help for students.

Registration procedure
EU citizens are treated in the same way as Polish citizens since May 1, 2004. In order to enroll for regular studies in Polish, they have to pass entrance exams or an interview depending on the admission requirements at the faculty in question. To register for studying at the Jagiellonian University, all candidates should fill in on-line form System Elektronicznej Rejestracji Kandydatow.
All candidates should fill in the electronic application form until 26 June.

Entrance requirements for Bachelor/Master programmes and Master programmes for holders of a Bachelor degree:

  • Completion of secondary school (or of Bachelor studies)
  • Good command of Polish
    Special requirements (e.g. interview) may be requested by individual departments. In such cases the International Students Office will inform the applicant about it.

    Postgraduate non-degree studies:
    Enquiries and applications for postgraduate programmes should be directed to the appropriate Faculty/Department organising the studies.

    Doctoral studies:
    Forms and requirements of doctoral studies are defined by the Regulations of Doctoral Studies (Regulamin Studiow Doktoranckich) issued and available at each faculty.
    Special requirements (e.g. interview) may be requested by individual departments and faculties. Therefore, applicants should contact the relevant Directors of Doctoral Studies

    The first step to apply for doctoral studies is to obtain a letter of declaration of the future supervisor for the doctoral dissertation. Potential supervisors and research activities can be found at the websites of each department.
    Foreigners applying for the Polish Government Scholarship should inquire and submit suitable documents at Polish Embassies and Consulates in their countries of residence. Their applications are later sent to the Jagiellonian University by the Bureau for Academic Recognition and International Exchange in Warsaw.
    Other foreigners applying for doctoral studies submit in the Office of the Dean of the appropriate Faculty or in the Office of the Director of Doctoral Studies at the appropriate Faculty the following documents:

  • Written request directed to the Dean of the appropriate Faculty
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copy of the Master's degree or diploma of completion of university studies obtained in Poland or abroad.
  • Photocopy of passport (page with photo)
  • Letter of declaration of the future supervisor
  • Application form (RTF 10 KB)
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Other documents reqiured by particular Dean
  • 3 passport photographs

    Additional information: It is possible to conduct a doctoral procedure (dissertation, examinations, defence) outside of a doctoral programme. The fee amounts to 2,000 EUR. Enquiries and requests should be directed to the appropriate Faculty or Director of doctoral studies.

    International certificates on secondary and higher education
    International certificates on secondary education (equivalents of Polish "Matura") are acknowledged in Poland in the process of nostrification, either by the "Wojewódzkie Kuratorium Oświaty" or on the basis of agreements between governments.
    International certificates on higher education, e.g. international Master's degrees,need to be acknowledged in Poland in the process of nostrification, either at the university by the faculty council or on the basis of agreements between governments.
    In case the secondary school-leaving exam or the diploma is issued in any language other than Polish or English a certified translation into Polish should be submitted.
