EXPLANATIONS AND REGULATIONS
Like other long-established universities, we use a few technical terms and phrases.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies
Studies – Studia
Full-time Bachelor or Master studies imply compulsory participation in classes,
seminars and lectures with the obligation of taking exams according to the study
programme of the given field. Part-time studies involve student participation
in chosen classes, lectures and seminars with the obligation of taking exams.
At the end of the Bachelor/Master studies, students are expected to submit a
dissertation and take an oral examination on their coursework, dissertation
and the general field of knowledge in which the dissertation falls.
Student – Student
A student receives:
- a student identity card
- a mark book
- a health registration document
Student Identity Card – Legitymacja studencka
A student document with photograph. It is issued by the Institute in which the student
has matriculated. It is valid only with the University seal, which is stamped for the periods of
1 October to 31 March and 1 April to 30 September. It entitles its holders to:
- use all university libraries
- reduced tickets on public transport in Krakow
- reduced train tickets in Poland (under the age of 26)
Mark book – Indeks
A student registration document with a photograph. The mark book records marks
and credits received during studies. It is issued by the Institute in which the
student has matriculated.
Research stay – Staz naukowo-badawczy
Full-time research without receiving an academic degree. A research stay
implies gathering materials in libraries, tutorial and/or non-compulsory
participation in classes, seminars or lectures without the obligation of
completing the courses and taking exams.
Research student/fellow – Stazysta
- has status of a visiting student
- receives a student identity card
- works with his/her tutor, appointed by the unit.
Health registration document– Ksiazeczka zdrowia
Student document with photograph:
- issued by the unit, only after the student has signed a contract with
Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia (temporary residence card and tax identification number are required)
- valid with student identity card
- entitles to free medical care in student health centres
Doctoral Studies
Doctoral Studies – Studia doktoranckie
Doctor's degree is the University’s main research degree for graduate
students and is available in all faculties. Doctoral students must carry out
supervised research for four years, normally full-time. From the beginning
student effort will be focused on writing a dissertation, which must represent
a significant contribution to learning. Apart from working long hours independently,
students must attend regular seminars in their subject area and may be
involved in teaching. Students are registered for the next year only after
a satisfactory assessment (exams and supervisor’s report). When a doctoral dissertation
is submitted, it will be examined jointly by two experts in the relevant area,
and then discussed in a public defence.
Doctoral student identity card – Legitymacja uczestnika studiow doktoranckich
Doctoral student document with photograph:
- issued by the Personnel Department of the Jagiellonian University (Collegium Novum)
- valid with the University seal for the period : 1 October – 30 September
- entitles to use of all university libraries
Submission of 2 photos is required. Doctoral students do not
have a 50% reduction on public transport.
Insurance document and registration – Legitymacja ubezpieczeniowa
Doctoral student document with photograph:
- issued by the Personnel Department of the Jagiellonian University (Collegium Novum),
only after the student has signed a contract with Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia
(temporary residence card and tax identification number are required)
- prolonged every month by Zaklad Ubezpieczen Spolecznych
- entitles to free medical care in public health centres.
