In June 25, 2003 the JU Senate adopted the University Code of Ethics to articulate and emphasize the principles and values which should govern the academic community. One of the factors which prompted the adoption of the code was a general consensus that such fundamental values as the truth, responsibility, teaching excellence and academic freedom were in jeopardy. The Senate noted with concern that their decline resulted in lowering educational standards, thus making knowledge and skills offered to students deficient. Furthermore, the decline has a negative impact on the quality and progress of academic research and as a consequence on the well-being of the whole nation. Thus the University Code of Ethics is a reminder of fundamental academic standards which for long have built up the prestige of science, accounting for the moral strength of the academia and providing it with the basis for advancing ethical and civic virtues. Their reflection in the attitudes and activities of, and interactions among the members of the university community guarantee sustainability of crucial moral values that have been shaped by a long-standing university tradition. The JU Code of Ethics is supplemented by the Code of Good University Practices, compiled by the Polish Rectors Foundation and passed by the Plenary Assembly of the Polish Rectors Conference on April 26, 2007
