Conference at Goethe University Frankfurt

A bi-annual conference from the series The University and the City, organized jointly by the Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Toronto, was held in Frankfurt am Main on 5-6 June 2014. On the 100th anniversary of its foundation, Goethe University invited 10 partner universities: from Toronto, Birmingham, Tel Aviv, Osaka, Vilnius, Prague (Charles University),  Philadelphia (University of Pennsylvania) Shanghai (Fundan University), Lyon (ENS) and Kraków. The Jagiellonian University was represented by the Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, Prof. Andrzej Mania and Dr Maria Kantor from the International Relations Office.

The conference was attended by more than 50 speakers, including members of municipal authorities (Kraków was represented by Vice-President Magdalena Sroka), authorities and international relations staff of the invited universities, professors, students, as well as members of various associations and educational agencies. The programme of the two-day conference consisted of panel sessions, discussions, and presentations about the invited universities.

The conference sessions were devoted to such issues as: political sphere, economic sphere, "whose university? whose city?", social activism, synergies, collaboration vs. competition, collaboration agreements between universities and cities. Prof. Andrzej Mania was among the panelists in the last session, which summed up the conference.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Goethe University Frankfurt, Prof. Andrzej Mania presented its president, Prof. Werner Müller-Esterl with a congratulatory address and the Medal of the 650th Jubilee of the Jagiellonian University.
