Prof. Sebastian Kortmann honoured by the Jagiellonian University

On October 17-18, the JU Vice Rector for Educational Affairs, Prof. Andrzej Mania took part in the Transfer of Rectorship ceremony at Radboud University, Nijmegen. Prof. Sebastian Kortmann, who headed the institution from 2007, was succeeded by Prof. Theo Engelen. The ceremony was held in Stevenskerk church and featured guests from a number of countries, especially rectors of IRUN network partner institutions.

During the ceremony, Prof. Andrzej Mania presented Prof. Sebastian Kortmann with the silver Plus ratio quam vis medal, in recognition of his special contribution to the advancement of international cooperation within the framework of IRUN. Thanks to his endeavours, the network has become known throughout Europe as an institution promoting the highest quality of academic research and teaching, and the Jagiellonian University has developed its international cooperation in many fields of scholarship and higher education. His superb skills as an organiser, as well as his kindness and friendship are greatly appreciated at the oldest Polish University.

The Plus ratio quam vis medal is awarded to honour persons distinguished for their eminent services to the Jagiellonian University. Minted to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the University's revival by Queen Saint Jadwiga and King Vladislaus Jagiełło, it was first presented to Pope John Paul II, an alumnus and honorary doctor of the Jagiellonian University. Other persons awarded with the medal include: the Nobel Prize winner Dr James Dewey Watson, the former prime minister of Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the former President of France, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, and the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.
