JU Rector visits China

On 6–9 December 2014, Prof. Wojciech Nowak, JU Rector, visited China. First, he met with Tadeusz Chomicki, the Polish Ambassador to China, in Beijing. Along with Prof. Adam W. Jelonek, Head of the Chair in East and South Asian Studies, they discussed the issues of employee and student exchanges between Chinese and Polish universities.

Next, the Rector travelled to Xiamen to take part in an international Confucius Institute conference. He was accompanied by Rev. Prof. Krzysztof Kościelniak, Head of the Institute of the Middle and Far East, Prof. Adam W. Jelonek, Dr Joanna Wardęga, Head of the Confucius Institute in Kraków, and Sun Zhongli, Deputy Head of the Confucius Institute in Kraków. During the meeting, the rectors and chancellors from several dozen universities debated on the possibility of using the Institutes to create scientific networks, cooperation between Chinese and foreign research and cultural institutions, and developing a system of language and PhD scholarships.

After the conference, some of the delegates took part in an annual meeting of Confucius Institutes working with the Beijing Foreign Studies University, an institution crucial to foreign language study in China. The Jagiellonian University is one of 21 universities cooperating with the BFSU.

There are already 475 Confucius Institutes around the world. They promote Chinese language and culture. The Jagiellonian University established the first one in Poland in 2006.
